Photovoltaic technology

Photovoltaic technology captures the energy of the sun to convert light directly into electricity. Energy from the sun is collected via photovoltaic cells made of semiconductor materials such as silicon. These cells convert the electricity into direct source electricity (DC power). This is then either used directly at the source, fed into the public grid or can be converted to AC power via an inverter and stored for later use in a battery device.

Solar energy is a viable option for independent power supply

For a standalone home system, solar photovoltaic (PV) systems provide the most viable source of electricity. In contrast to solar energy, wind and hydropower are site-specific and are strongly affected by the seasons. For instance, a small wind turbine requires wind speeds of at least four meters per second to generate electricity, and there are seasons during which there is very little wind. Water supply is also very seasonal, as there are many places that have dry and wet seasons.

Solar energy, however, is generated even on cloudy days, and a solar battery system ensures energy access even at night. It is the only technology that can function anywhere despite geographic variations in the resource (in this case, the sun). There is no need to regulate the site beforehand and there is little maintenance required once the installation is complete.

Mini-grids provide solution for independent power supply

The most efficient approach to delivering electricity to a residential area or a village is the so called mini-grid (also known as micro-grid).

The system works as follows: Each house has many square meters of photovoltaic panels on their roofs & carports. Alternatively, a ground mounted solar power system consisting of solar modules held in place by racks or frames may also be build in the proximity of the residential area.

Maximizing direct consumption

Storage systems make use of existing networks and do not require new power lines. Electricity generated and consumed locally does not have to be transported across public power grids. The decentralized solar batteries temporarily store the generated solar power during the day and release it on a time-delayed basis. In order to gain this benefit, solar power systems operating in combination with storage systems are required.

The use of storage systems enables operators of solar power systems to more than double the share of directly consumed self-generated solar power. In a single family household with a photovoltaic system operating in combination with a battery storage system, consumers can effectively reduce their electricity consumption by up to 60 percent This gives producers of solar power the assurance that they are, for the most part, consuming environmentally friendly electricity .

The photovoltaic panels convert sunlight into electrical energy. This DC energy is then converted through an inverter from the DC current into 220 volts for direct consumption, fed into the public grid...

...or fed to a central battery where it is stored for use after sunset or during cloudy weather.
